About The Glaziery

The Glaziery specializes in many techniques for the repair, restoration, conservation, and creation of custom stained glass. From removal to install, we restore the glass panels of residential, ecclesiastic, and commercial locations throughout Portland and its vicinity.

Whether it be a small at-home repair or a large restoration within a sanctuary, we serve the full spectrum. We are well versed in many metals used in the construction of panels, whether it be lead, zinc, brass, copper, or steel. Often, when being restored or rebuilt, our techniques improve the original structure and increase the longevity of antique panels.

We consider all handmade objects that pass through our hands as precious, and when conservation is necessary, we treat the object with great attention and care. Irreplaceable shattered glass can be salvaged with the aid of conservator's epoxy. We have over 25 years of experience bringing pieces back together through our edge gluing techniques, and when conservation is not feasible we can replicate any design.

Mission Statement

Our studio exists as a mere pebble within the ever-changing history of the art and craft of stained glass, an art form that transforms the gifts of the Earth into matrices illuminated through time by the Sun and veiled by the changing seasons. Historical records place the beginning of stained glass in the 7th century, although those documents hint that the knowledge of the craft was already present at the time of their writing. Prior to this, the exploration of vitreous minerals and amalgamous metals had been occurring for millennia. This journey brought about 13 centuries of miraculous works of the art that transmit the beauty of the Sun and Earth.

Over the last century, stained glass has ventured and endured many changes and hardships leaving us at the doorstep of an uncertain time for the art form. Our current population growth, resource depletion, economic inflation, cultural changes, and technological developments have put a strain upon the future of stained glass. We find ourselves at a point where the restoration of these many creations of the past are long overdue and dangling by threads, leaving us scampering to retain their structures and building very little room to develop a burgeoning future for the craft.

Our studio brings more than 25 years of experience within the art form and a gathered knowledge from our predecessors that spans from coast to coast. We have been privileged to hand down our skills to our apprentices to see the craft continue into the future and aid in the preservation of the structures in Portland and beyond. We are honored to fall into the footsteps of our local predecessors from the Povey Brothers, Pacific Art Glass, and Edward Brun to Albert Gerlach, Bert Willemse, and David Schlicker. At times these footsteps are quite literal through the art of restoration and conservation, setting our hands upon artwork that has been put through the test of time and elemental forces of nature. Within our own creations we welcome that same test and look forward to the future stewards of stained glass.
